What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
The human body requires fats for a range of uses. In most cases, the human body can make most types of fats it requires from raw materials or other fats. Omega-3 is the exception. It must be derived from food to provide your body with what it needs to form cell membranes and keep neurons communicating efficiently.
Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, vegetable oils, leafy greens, flaxseed oil and walnuts. Omega-3s play a pivotal role in several bodily functions, including regular blood clotting, reduction of inflammation and relaxation of artery walls. Without enough omega-3 in your diet, you are at greater risk of severe medical conditions, including heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and eczema.
Omega-3 fats come in three forms:
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) – ALA is the most commonly found omega-3 fatty acid in the traditional American or Western diet. ALA is found in flax seeds, nuts, vegetable oils, leafy greens and animal fats derived from grass-fed animals like cows. Because ALA is a precursor to the beneficial EPA & DHA (see below), the body must convert it into these forms.
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)/Docosahexenoic Acid (DHA) – These two fatty acids come primarily from oily fish. They are often referred to as the two “marine omega-3s.”
Are you getting enough omega-3 in your diet? Chances are the answer is no. Recent research reveals 68% of adults and 90% of American children consume inadequate amounts of omega-3 in their diet. The average American adult consumes only 90 mg of omega-3 a day. It is recommended we get at least 300 mg/day to meet the body’s demand for these critical nutrients.
Consuming enough omega-3 is challenging, so taking an omega-3 supplement is vital to good health. Without a comprehensive omega-3 fatty acid supplement, you are likely not functioning at your best. You could be putting yourself at risk of a range of physical ailments and even mental health conditions, including depression.
Omega-3 Supplement Benefits
Because our bodies don’t make omega-3s, they are a pivotal part of a healthy diet. The best omega-3 supplements can bolster your body’s physical and mental health in many ways. The science is clear: If you don’t consume enough omega-3 in the long term, you risk poor health and the onset of chronic conditions.
Here are some reasons why taking an omega-3 fish oil supplement should become part of your daily routine.
Omega-3 for Eye Health
Are you wondering if you should take omega-3 for dry eyes? Consuming supplements with omega-3 for your eyes can benefit those dealing with dry eye and manage its symptoms. DHA and EPA have excellent anti-inflammatory properties and, at a level of roughly two grams per day, have been shown in several studies to benefit those with dry eye disease. Omega-3 supplements are a great way to provide your body with enough nutrients to help ease dry eye. TG-Omega 3 fish oil is the best omega-3 supplement for dry eyes as it has the right level and ratio of EPA to DHA.
Omega-3 for Skin Health
Omega-3 is a win for the skin. Including omega-3s in your regular diet can improve its appearance.
DHA and EPA are powerful, natural components of the skin that keep it looking healthy. A diet rich in omega-3s can help reduce inflammation and improve skin elasticity.
Omega-3s also soften and hydrate the skin, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Consider taking an omega-3 supplement to promote better skin health overall.
Omega-3 for Inflammation
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to infections and other forms of damage. It remains a perfectly natural part of dealing with illness and physical injury. However, inflammation is designed to be a short-term measure to limit the damage to your body’s systems.
Persistent, chronic inflammation can have the opposite effect on the body, leading to various diseases, including cancer, heart disease, macular degeneration and dementias like Alzheimer’s disease. Unfortunately, chronic inflammation becomes more of a risk as you get older.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the production of molecules like inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoids. You are more likely to experience short-term inflammation than a chronic problem with fewer of these molecules in the blood.
Omega-3 for Alzheimer’s Disease
Brain decline is a natural consequence of aging. However, some experience the decline more gradually than others. Alzheimer’s Disease is a chronic and incurable disease that impacts the lives of millions, but there’s evidence to show that increasing your omega-3 intake can slow the decline.
Several studies have replicated the link between higher omega-3 intake, decrease in age-related mental decline and a lowered risk of Alzheimer’s Disease onset.
While knowledge of how omega-3 impacts the brain remains limited, exciting discoveries are being made in this space.
Omega-3 for Arthritis and Osteoporosis
Aches and pains are another reality of aging. Your skeletal system carries a lot of weight and takes tremendous punishment throughout life. Unfortunately, this can lead to arthritis and osteoporosis, two common age-related conditions.
Boosting your bone strength can alleviate symptoms and reduce the risk of being diagnosed with either of these conditions. Studies have shown that omega-3s improve bone strength by increasing the production of calcium in your bones, which can prevent osteoporosis.
On the other hand, omega-3s have also been linked to the treatment of arthritis, with patients utilizing omega-3 supplementation enjoying improved grip strength and reduced joint pain.
Which supplement should you consider taking?
Scientific research has demonstrated that omega-3 in the triglyceride form has significantly higher bioavailability than ethyl ester-based supplements. This is because the triglyceride form of omega-3 is absorbed quickly in the body and utilized by it. Ethyl ester, on the other hand, must first be broken down into free fatty acids before being used. This means that your body has to work harder to get the maximum benefit from an ethyl ester supplement, thus making the triglyceride form a more effective choice.
